Girl Wonder

This historical fiction picture book follows Alta Weiss, a young girl growing up in rural Ohio with an extraordinary talent for pitching. By the age of seventeen, Alta has outpitched every boy in her neighborhood, prompting her father to take her to try out for the Independents, a local semipro baseball team in Vermilion. However, the team's coach refuses to let her play, insisting that girls are not suited for the sport. Alta must challenge these rigid societal expectations and step onto the pitcher's mound to prove her skills to the doubters.
